Political Cartoons as Public Art
in Patras, Greece.

In 2004 I had the honor to be invited by
the Greece Ministry of Culture
to participate in a conference & workshop
to take place in cities of Athens and Patras,
 the last one designated
the Cultural Capital of Europe for 2005.

About 2 dozen of European cartoonists and
the same number of Greek cartoonists
got together and in a marathonic session,
among tons of coffee, ouzo and cigarettes,
created political and humorous cartoons
that were later displayed in banners
all over the city of Patras.

I have never seen something similar,
a city adorned with political cartoons
as public art!

The Greek people were amazing guests
and it was a pleasure to be back again,
being this my 3rd of 4 visits I have made
to this marvelous country.

They took us to museums, delicious tabernas,
 to Delphi, Olympia, Messolonghi
(the cradle of their independence),
had a tour of the Acropolis accompanied by
the Minister of Culture, and, on top of that,
had lunch with the President!

I encourage everybody who has the means,
to visit Greece and support them
during this tough economic times.
Long Live Greece!

REVIEWS

"A little boy pays homage to his remarkably talented and creative teacher who confidently and competently teaches skills, concepts, ideas, behavior and more. In an alphabetical list of accomplishments told in rhyming text, readers see how anyone from an astronaut learning to float in space to a kayaker pulling a stroke, to a zillionaire living in style can learn from this wonderful woman. But most important is the children, and in particular, the little boy who's fortunate to be in her class this year, learning about a world beyond the three Rs. Galindo's simple, flat illustrations in lively colors outlined in black highlight each lesson's scenario with a multicultural group of young students An inspiring introduction to the new school year."
Kirkus Reviews

"A boy's loving boast about his teacher ('My teacher is so good, she can teach... anyone!') carries little listeners through the alphabet from astronaut to zillionaire as he describes how his teacher could, for example, 'teach the Governor how to host a lunch,' or 'teach a Heavyweight how to throw a punch.' The classroom where kids role-play the jobs is a model of inclusiveness, and both specialized (astronaut, ballet dancer), and everyday (janitor, mechanic) occupations are highlighted. The illustrations, almost startling in their brightness, fit the happy boastfulness of the book... this is... a fun peek at careers that are just right for young children."  Booklist
